Costa Rica!

This place has it all in a small land area. You can go from stunning ocean beaches to creeks as hard as you want within hours. The wildlife is everywhere. Coming from a Colorado winter where everything is frozen it was a pleasure to do some warm water boating. Here are some photos from my recent trip.

The Rios Tropicales lodge on the Pacuare. This place was amazing! It's everything you could want out of a lodge on an amazing river in the middle of the jungle! I highly recommend the trip.

This is the dam being built on the Pascua section Reventezon. By 2015 the section we paddled will be under water. Hydro projects are a serious threat to many rivers in Costa Rica. The projects have a direct effect on the local economies and basically shut a thriving tourism industry down. No river, no jobs...

Costa Rica is a guaranteed paddling adventure. I can't wait to go back.

Here is a little video shot with the Go Pro HD. This was my first trip with the camera and I must say that I am impressed. The camera is super easy to use, compact, and produces quality video.

Yule Creek

Yule creek has been on the RCRE hit list for years and last weekend we got to fire it up. First off, Marble CO is off the hook for boating. The views are incredible and the geology is conducive to making sick waterfalls and slides. What else do you want folks?

We got to Yule around 2:00pm and began to assess the situation. The flow on the Avalanche creek gauge was around 1000. We had beta on wood in the upper drops so we decided to rope down and fire what has been haunting Brian and me for years; the bottom four.

Note! When you get down to creek level it looks a lot different than it does from up high. Wall check drops out steep in the beginning and the massage is HUGE!

Dropping in on oriental massage is one of the coolest feelings. I ended up launching off the first big flake reconnecting and then airing the rest into the pool. Sorry no vid, the camera was in my boat.

Highest Water Fish

Marty Smith and Kevin Fisher RCRE elite members just dominated Fish creek at the highest its ever been. The water is coming over the gauge and its reading 1570cfs around 3.5 ft unofficially. Regardless it was huge. They put in below the big set on middle and hauled on out. Fisher broke his backband in the midst of th gnar but dominated in the end. I think these huge flows are going to clean things up and change rapids for sure.. Be Safe and enjoy the high water!

Cali Love 2010

My trip started on April 29th in front of my house looking at my truck covered in snow. I headed to Steamboat for one last day of work before the annual RCRE spring Cali trip. I only had to make it til 2 p.m. and then..... 10 days of freedom.... Cali baby!!! The crew had the truck packed by 3:00 and we were on the road.

We headed for Tahoe and the Cosumnes. I drove through the night to wake up the next morning in the drivers seat passed out in a Super Wal-Mart parking lot. We got supplies, got lost a couple of times, and put on the Cosumnes for our first time ever at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Its only 4 miles, how hard could it be?

First Stop Upper Middle Cosumnes, here is a link to Mcquoids blog that we used for beta. We had a higher flow of 425cfs.

Overall the UMC is well worth doing, but I'd recommend an earlier put on time. We eventually got to the take out at 8:30 p.m. There are access issues at the put-in. Be respectful and courteous to the homeowners at the put in. It is a very private and secluded neighborhood. There is talk of putting up a gate to keep kayakers out. Don't screw this up, play it super low key!

A massive storm system came in and changed the itinirary. We head for good weather and perfect flows. When the Kern drainage has water it is off the hook!

Marty stepped up for the day and ran it seven times. I ended up pitoning and cracking the nose of my kayak. Brush is a low stress blast. Our flows peaked around 3 on the gauge serving up great times but more water in this creek would be sick.

The following morning we ended up running into Eric Giddens and Geno at our base camp in the parking lot. They were heading up to run Upper Brush Creek - the "UBC" sucka. It hasn't run in four years due to drought. Our crew from Colorado specializes in running wood mank. Come to Cali and run a manky wood infested creek? Sure. It turns out the UBC is legit. It starts out a little manky, but I think we put in too high on the creek. As you go on it just gets better and better. Check out Giddens's write up on his blog.

I highly recommend this creek. Kernville folks need to clean this thing!

The weather was still lingering north and we were pretty cashed from the day prior so we decided to run the main Kern at 2000. It was a super fun day with some classic rapids. Here are some highlights.

Kernville was good to us this year! The weather was clearing up north and we headed for the Kaweah.

All the flows in the Kaweah drainage were high so we decided to go run the North Fork of the Kaweah. We met up with Kevin Dombey for some North Fork action.

The Black Canyon of the Gunnison is definitely one of the best runs in Colorado. It has great rapids, challenging portages, unbelievable scenery, incredible camping, great fishing, and a scenic hike out. What else could you ask for? Here is a little photo dump from my recent trip!

So it is officially September and Blue Grass Creek is going off while the surrounding areas are drying up waiting for the winter restock. You can find this late season jem northeast of Lariame, WY on highway 34. Turn on tunnel rd. take a left after the bridge, followed by three more lefts on the 4x4 roads. You end up at the bottom of a hill staring at a river blasting out of a black hole.. For more info on AW click here.

After the main rapid on bucking bronco the river takes a hard left. Around the corner awaits a potential pin rock in the center of the river. Be prepared to drive hard left or right. Once you finish negotiating this first 1/2 mile of choice whitewater you get 20+ fences, miles of class II/III, some IV's and then the

MAIN EVENT.

The Main Event is definitely on private property. We met the land owner and wants boaters to be able to scout at the main event. He also said absolutely do not get out of your boat below the Main Event to the take out. Lots of private property in this area, respect!

Late Season Boof Madness.

So it’s July and Steamboat boating is slowly coming to an end. The C-hole is full of tubers and fish creek is a trickle. Your only semi-convenient after work option is the Elk Box.

The Elk Box can be found outside Clark, Colorado, north of Steamboat. It’s something to do in July and it’s sweet boof practice. The box can be run down to 450ish and up to whatever you want with 700 being the optimal on the Milner gauge. A couple of weeks ago we cleaned her out.

Put in on the North Fork; creek the tight boulder gardens to the confluence with the Middle Fork.

At this point get as much speed as you can and head river center to launch Mega-Boof into the sky.
